How to add a countdown timer to your live stream

Starting soon screens, segment timers and clocks for OBS, vMix, ATEM and any browser.

By John Barker • 15 September 2026

Why every stream needs a countdown

The minutes before a live stream starts are when you lose viewers. People click in, see a black screen or a frozen camera, and leave. A countdown timer tells them three things at once: the stream is real, it is starting soon, and exactly how long they need to wait.

Timers are useful during the show too. Speaker timers keep a conference on schedule, segment timers keep a podcast tight, and a match clock makes a sports stream feel like television.

The quickest option: a free browser countdown

If you just need a holding screen right now, use our free fullscreen countdown timer. Set the time, pick a look, and add the page as a browser source in OBS or a web browser input in vMix. Settings live in the URL, so you can bookmark it and reuse it every week.

It is perfect for a “starting soon” screen. When you need more than that, such as a timer on top of your cameras, a timer controlled from a Stream Deck, or several timers in one show, use H2R Graphics.

Countdown timers in H2R Graphics

The Time graphic in H2R Graphics covers four kinds of timer:

  • Countdown: pick a duration, such as 10 minutes, and count down to zero. Great for breaks and segments.
  • To time of day: pick a clock time, such as 7:00pm, and count down to it. This is the one you want for a starting soon screen, because it always hits zero at the real start time no matter when you press go.
  • Count up: count up from zero, or from a custom start time. Sports streams can start at 45:00 for the second half and count up to 90:00.
  • Current date and time: a clock for studios, holding screens and multi-time-zone events.

You choose the display format too, so the same timer can show 10:00, 00:10:00 or just minutes.

Setting up a starting soon screen

  1. Download H2R Graphics and open your project.
  2. Add a Message graphic with “Starting soon” and a Time graphic set to To time of day with your start time.
  3. Add the H2R Graphics output to your streaming software. In OBS that is a single Browser Source, in vMix a Web Browser input. See the guides for OBS, vMix and ATEM.
  4. Put both graphics on air over a background image or a looping video, start streaming 10 to 15 minutes early, and let the timer do the talking.

Speaker and segment timers

For conferences and panels, presenters need to see the time even when the audience does not. The Pro Speaker timer is designed for a confidence monitor: big, readable from the stage, and separate from what goes to the stream. With multiple outputs you can send the speaker timer to a stage screen and your lower thirds to the stream at the same time.

Control from anywhere

Timers can be started, paused and reset from the H2R Graphics app, from a phone or tablet on your local network, or from a Stream Deck through the Companion module. That means your operator can run the clock without touching the streaming computer.

Countdown tips that keep viewers watching

  • Count to a real time, not a duration. “To time of day” means the stream always starts when you said it would.
  • Add music. Silence makes people think their audio is broken. A quiet music bed tells them everything is working.
  • Show what is coming. Put the title of the show, the speaker or the match on the starting soon screen so people know they are in the right place.
  • Keep it short. Start streaming 10 to 15 minutes early. Any longer and you are asking people to stare at a timer.
  • Hit zero on time. If the timer reaches zero and nothing happens, viewers leave. Be ready to cut to your opening the moment it ends.
